Countdown to Linen Ladies show in Greensville

The first show of the season is coming up. May 2nd  11-7 and the 3rd 10-4. Below is a  selection of some of the bags of vintage lace I am taking to the show.                   Come and see us in Greensville.

This was a bad winter for buying as sales were few and far between,but that is over now and I got some wonderful things the last 3 weekends.

My friend Ellen and I went out for the past 2 Saturdays. Last week we drove through a blizzard for more than an hour. At one stop the wind was bitterly cold and severe. We stopped there again yesterday and it was 20 degrees,the sun was shining,and the "peepers",(frogs) in the wetlands across the road were singing up a storm. One week and the change was remarkable. 

I love the table and it is going to be my new coffee table. It has been cut down already so I can safely make it a little shorter,I could never be the first to shorten a table.! I love the paint,and it has a leather top.

I think the cake plates are very interesting. The man has a mug in his hand and on the back it say"The Favourite Tea." Very cool. The silver has cherubs hauling carts full of flowers engraved,so I may have to keep that. The towel rack is a beauty with the makers name and info stamper on the back board. As usual there is fabric,rag balls,and quilt squares. This is just a little glimpse of some of the treasures for the upcoming shows.

The "Greensville" show is Fri.May 2nd  11-7, Sat.May 3rd 10-4. Christ Church Hall-92 Highway 8, Greensville. Regulars call it the "Linen ladies" show.

Then it moves on to Christie. Largest antique show in Canada. Sat. May 24    8-5 .  Barb and I are at Booth S4. New corner for us.

That same day in NOTL, at my friend Hilary's house,we have a garden sale at 65 Niagara St. 10-3 and it is also on May 31  10-3. We have plants,garden items,antiques,linens,everything to help you entertain and create a magical garden. We restock for the second week.

Then there is the Antiques at the Market, in Niagara on the Lake.  Sat. June 7th  right beside the farmers market, in front of Shopper's Drug Mart on Hwy.55.

Some recent finds

This has been a brutal winter for buying. The estate sales have been very poor and few and far between,due to the weather. I did however,get some nice things in the past couple of weeks. Some I forgot to take a picture of and they are already gone. So here are some pictures of my finds.

I really like turkey red embroidery. The cat cardboard cutout has a cat all dressed up and her hat box is labelled "Miss Alla Lone".

This is a sweet bench made from an old cottage style single bed. The flower detail is lovely.

I got some Victorian linens and I put them on here before I finished with them. The nightgowns are washed not ironed,and the sheets are not washed yet. I have 2 sets of them.

 These milk glass pitchers are very heavy and incredibly detailed. Perfect for lemonade or water. The last pieces I will take to the garden sale in Niagara on the Lake.

So even though I say it hasn't been a good buying winter,I have found some nice items for the summer sales.

A Vintage Calico Pocket Made by Me.

   A couple of years ago,I got to go to an estate sale here in Niagara before the public did. I was in heaven,the family had been in business and there was all kinds of unsold,unused stock in the linen closet. It dated back 2 maybe 3 generations. From Victorian to 1950's were left in this closet,more like a room,and all for me to search through. I spent 2 days in there!
   I made a mistake and sold 2 antique calico pockets from there before I had time to research them. I had never seen any before,and I would dearly love to get those back.    Women wore handmade pockets under their skirts and over their petticoats. They were accessed through a slit in the skirt. This was in the 1800's and they would hold their sewing rolls,keys,
etc. They made them by hand and they would be embroidered or decorated and usually made from scraps,all for their pleasure and to practice their skills.
   So I got a pattern from a book and I made my own from antique quilt squares and fabric. Here is my first, and maybe last attempt.The pictures don't show how gorgeous the fabric is.

I made the edging and the lining from the same fabric.

The back was another antique quilt square.

And as always,my helper was asleep on the job!!

I might make a smaller pair that would have been for young girls. At least I finally have a pocket. It would probably have been sewn better by a 5 year old girl in the 1800's. I might make a sewing roll as well. Keep looking.

Winter is a good time to work on projects

Hello everyone,welcome to winter. For me this is a good time to get upholstery done. I don't want to be inside working in the basement in the summer months! I recently did 2 little stools. 

I love doing little stools.I have oodles of the crewel fabric,it is the real thing, done in India. It will for sale at Christie. See the end for all the show dates.

The next pictures are my booth 059 at Southworks. I cleaned and restocked last week.

Greensville Linen Ladies show is May 2 and 3.
Aberfoyle is May 10.

Happy Vintage New Year to you all !!

What a strange Christmas,I hope I never repeat it. I got sick on the 17th and I only got up to go to Christmas and went back to bed when I got home. I never saw my sisters as their houses had no power and they didn't want to leave them. Sandra's power was off 6 days,Barb's 4,but she had to deal with a huge ice covered tree that had been falling on her house. 5 days later it was all down but no more places to put the debris!
   I had a lovely time at Judy and Ted's but even they felt weird that the rest of the group was missing.
    In December my friend told me about an online auction of all the props from the TV series,"The Copper." It was about a policeman in New York city in 1850's. I got some wonderful things but the best are these lovely gilt chairs. I used them this week but they are for sale.

Now that winter is here,I need to get organized for the busy summer months. I am cleaning up my upholstery room and I got great plastic boxes at Walmart. 5 boxes for 5 bucks. Perfect for lace bits, embroidered bits,buttons,trim etc. Run don't walk and get some to tidy up your workplace.
That is about all I buy at Walmart, organizers and cat food!

So that is all,I am going shopping tommorrow,maybe I will have something to post after my trip

LOTS TO SHOW YOU !

I did a couple of shows but haven't shown you what I have made. I found a lovely little bed that you have seen before,but I made bedding for it. Then I found another but I haven't got it done yet. It looks so cute with a doll sized quilt and a ticking pillow and mattress.

As usual,my pictures won't go where I want them to !

I do a show with my friend for Christmas,in Niagara On the Lake
and I made a few things for it.
It was a good show and now I can catch up at my booths.

These little sachets were made from a vintage quilt made from early calico. That has to be my favourite fabric.

This is a nice collection of vintage purses that I had at the sale.

I made these Victorian style ornaments with real spun glass and angel faces that I bought in a religious store on a small Greek island over 20 years ago! I am finally using them. Almost missed the ferry to get off the island and get to an airport as my sister and I were enthralled with this store full of treasures.

Finally I have a picture that shows the wonderful things that I found today. I am thrilled that I got 3 pieces of early 19th century china.  I may have to keep them, the never ending  dilemma of a dealer, sell it or keep it.
